Las Mañanitas

Griselda's alarm goes off at five because the bus to her clinic in El Dorado takes an hour and fifteen minutes with two transfers. She could drive, but the math doesn't work — a car payment plus gas plus parking would eat half the savings she's building for her daughter's university fund.

Las Mañanitas is where Griselda can afford a three-bedroom that gives her mother a private room and her daughter a quiet place to study. The apartment is in a ten-year-old development that's held up well — the management fees cover a security guard, a small pool the kids use on weekends, and basic maintenance. The nearest Super 99 is a ten-minute drive; a cluster of Chinese restaurants and a pharmacy are slightly closer.

The neighborhood blurs into 24 de Diciembre on one side and Tocumen on the other — the boundaries are administrative, not experiential. What varies is the age of the construction and the state of the roads. Las Mañanitas has a few more mature trees, a few more established commercial strips, and slightly better bus coverage than the newer developments further east.

Griselda's life is shaped by the commute. Everything — social life, errands, entertainment — happens either in the neighborhood or during the narrow windows between getting home and needing to sleep. It's a trade-off she's made consciously: space and ownership over convenience.

For expats, Las Mañanitas shares the same profile as Panama City's other eastern suburbs — affordable, family-oriented, and completely off the radar of anyone who doesn't already know someone here.
