Chanis

Ricardo and Valentina rented in El Carmen when they were newlyweds — a one-bedroom studio that felt romantic until the baby arrived. The move to Chanis gave them a two-bedroom with a parking spot for nine hundred dollars, versus the fourteen hundred they would have paid for the same space in their old neighborhood.

The daily routine is car-shaped. Ricardo drops the baby at Valentina's mother's house in Don Bosco (fifteen minutes), continues to his office near Multiplaza (twenty minutes), and picks everyone up in reverse order. Valentina's school is in Chanis itself, so she walks when the weather cooperates.

The neighborhood is a mosaic of gated apartment developments built in the last fifteen years. Each one has a pool, a small playground, and a WhatsApp group where residents negotiate guest parking and complain about management fees. The commercial strips outside the gates have everything functional — pharmacies, mini-supers, a laundromat, Chinese restaurants, a couple of pizza places.

Weekends mean Metromall or the food court at Town Center. Sometimes they drive to the Causeway for a walk or to Casco Viejo for brunch — both about thirty minutes. It's a contained, practical life organized around the car and the child.

For expats, Chanis offers newer construction and family-friendly living at eastern-suburb prices. You need a car and tolerance for suburban rhythms. The upside is that apartments are modern, buildings are well-managed, and the community is young-family friendly in a way that high-rise living downtown isn't.
