Las Garzas is a recently created corregimiento (2017) in central Panama City — affordable, functional, and unknown by name even to many Panamanians. Central location with urban services but no distinct character or expat presence. The kind of area where good deals hide because nobody is looking.
Newly designated corregimiento (2017) — central, mixed-use, overlooked
Tomás splits a three-bedroom with two roommates — six hundred dollars divided three ways makes it the cheapest option near campus. Las Garzas only became its own corregimiento in 2017, carved out of what was previously part of the Bella Vista administrative area, and most people still don't know the name.
The neighborhood is a patchwork — some blocks look like older Calidonia with low-rise apartments and corner stores, others have newer mid-rise buildings marketing to young professionals. The main commercial strips have the essentials: pharmacies, mini-supers, barber shops, phone repair places. Nothing fancy, everything functional.
Tomás walks to UTP in twenty minutes or catches a bus on the main road. At night he studies at the apartment because there's no cafe culture here — when his group needs to meet somewhere with WiFi and air conditioning, they go to a McDonald's in Calidonia or a Starbucks in El Cangrejo.
The area's obscurity is actually an asset — rents haven't caught up to the central location because nobody markets Las Garzas as a neighborhood. It just exists, quietly, serving the people who live there without any of the premium that comes with a known name.
For expats, Las Garzas is a footnote — unless you happen to find a well-priced apartment here, there's no reason to seek it out specifically. But it's worth knowing it exists as an affordable option in a central location.
