About La Cresta

La Cresta is a leafy, quiet residential neighborhood wedged between El Cangrejo, Bella Vista, and Bethania — offering the same central walkability at lower rents. One of Panama City's best-kept expat secrets. Limited inventory but excellent value for retirees and professionals who want a calm home base in the heart of the city.

A Day in the Life
🇵🇦
Diane and Paul Kowalski
American retirees from Minneapolis, both 66, moved to Panama eight months ago after two scouting trips

Diane and Paul almost rented in El Cangrejo — every blog post and YouTube video said to start there. Then their real estate agent showed them a two-bedroom in La Cresta, one block from the El Cangrejo border, for two hundred dollars less per month. Same walkability, same restaurants within reach, but on a tree-lined street where the loudest sound is parrots.

Their morning routine is a walk to the Einstein's Bagels in El Cangrejo — fifteen minutes at Diane's pace. Paul gets coffee, Diane gets a smoothie, and they sit outside watching the neighborhood wake up. Groceries alternate between the Riba Smith on Via España (fifteen-minute walk) and the Super 99 near Via Argentina. They haven't needed a car.

La Cresta's secret is that it has no brand. El Cangrejo has the restaurants, Bella Vista has the towers, Obarrio has the business hotels — La Cresta has quiet streets and reasonable rents. The buildings are eight to twelve stories, old enough to have proper-sized rooms but new enough to have elevators and parking. Most have a portero at the desk.

Paul joined a morning walking group — mostly Panamanian retirees with a few expats — that loops through Parque Andrés Bello and back. Diane takes a Spanish class at a language school in El Cangrejo, ten minutes on foot. In the evenings they cook or walk to one of the dozen restaurants within four blocks.

The one caveat: inventory is tight. La Cresta is small and word has gotten around. When a good apartment opens up, it moves fast.
